In this photograph, Gosling composes the image of a sidewalk atop a pair of flip-flops — each small stone hand-painted and carefully placed one by one with tweezers. The flip-flops are suspended, floating between the ground and the sky, as if the feet meant to wear them were at rest, lifted. Perhaps this choice reveals a metaphor: the human collective has no feet, even though each individual has their own to walk their path. After all, who guides the course of a nation, if not its citizens, together? As kind and generous as Brazilians may be, this is not a land free of conflict. And yet, the people sing, dance, and celebrate at every carnival or popular festivity — a pacified state in constant upheaval.
